A Girl' s Troubles
chapter 1
Don't own Avatat blah blah blah.
Lonely sapphire eyes stared out of a glassy window of the Bullet Train. The scenery went by in a flash of green and blue. Ever since she left her home in Fuyu, Katara had been all but clam. The thought of being away from her family made her uneasy and the thought of living on her own in Omashu made butterflies scramble through her stomach. She had heard of the city before, but she never thought that she would ever visit it. She sat comfortably in the plush seats of the sliver formed train. It was by far the fastest train in the entire world. She twisted a piece of paper in her hand. Before she left, her mother had written important information on it. It was a hard thing to leave her family and friends behind, but she was off to start her own life in Omashu. Out of her whole graduating class, Katara was the only one who was accepted to Omashu University.
Within the two hours that past, all she did was star out the window and ponder about her destination. What would Omashu look like? Was it a big city? Were there many people there? Were those people friendly? So many questions to wonder about. It was a matter of time before all her thinking wore her brain out. Her eyes grew heavy and she slipped into the world of sleep. She was awoken by a loud voice. It was the conductor of the train. He was announcing the stop.
“Omashu Train Station.” He said over the intercom. Katara stood up stretching out her legs. She pulled her bag down from the overhang compartment and followed some people off the train. The weather outside was warm and sunny. She wasn’t used to warm. Her hometown of Ashi was made of ice, stone and snow. Fuyu was located in the South Pole, a long distance away from Omashu, about 600 miles worth of traveling. First by plain then by train, it was quite a hassle to take. Katara studied her new surroundings. The station was made from what seemed to be sandstone with a green tile roof. Signs hung over doorways and stands were filled with bouncers and fliers. Out of the corner of her eye, Katara saw a map of the city. It seemed that the city was divided into four main branches with three districts in each.
“I’ll get lost for sure.” Katara thought to her self. She had no idea where the college was located. Then she remembered the paper her mother had given her. She took it out of her jean pocket and examined it. It said that the college was located in the third branch in the second district. “Perfect!” Katara thought as her high hopes dissipated fast, “How am I going to get to the third branch?” She was currently in the first branch, first district. That was the entrance to the city and she had no clue how to find her way out of it. Did this place have a bus system? She continued to stare at the map, trying to find a way through the huge sandstone city and make it to her goal.
“Oh this is hopeless.” She muttered to herself.
“What’s hopeless?” Katara turned around to find herself staring into the eyes of a young man. He had slightly tanned skin and mahogany hair that stretched to the middle of his back. He kept it pulled back into a lose ponytail, so lose that some of it had fallen around his face. He had green eyes that reminded Katara of leaves in summer.
“Um…I…I can’t seem to find the…um…college.” Katara cursed herself for stuttering.
“Well, “ He said, “You must be a student there, and from the looks of it you are not from around here are you?” She shook her head. “I’m a student too, I can take you if you like.”
“Ok!” She didn’t mean for her voice to go up that high, but she was happy that she had someone to take her to the university.
“I’m Haru.”
“I’m Katara.”

Haru had just finished at the library and was heading back to the campus of the university, when he spotted the bullet train entering the station. He decided to go and check things out. It wasn’t unusual to see travels come of the bullet train, but the train’s route was so long that it took awhile for it to come back, a whole six months to be exact. He entered the Omashu Station seeing crowds of people everywhere. He saw people from the Fire Nation, some from the other Earth Nation cites and some Air Nation people, but no Water Nation. The Water Nation was so far away that they rarely left their own land. Haru thought it was a sad thing that the people of the Water Nation never traveled outside their own country, but he had never left his own country either. He was just about to leave when he saw a girl walk up to the map on the far wall. He had never seen anyone like her before. She had brown, not tan, but brown skin. Her hair was the color of rich coffee. He personally hated coffee; liked the smell, hated the taste. He watched her for a while realizing that she had no idea where she was. He knew this city well enough to at least get her going in the right direction.
He walked through the crowds over to her. He was right behind her when she muttered something.
“What’s hopeless?” He asked. The girl spun around to meet his face. She had the most beautiful blue eyes he had ever seen. “Wait a minute”, He thought, “No one in the Earth Nation has blue eyes.” That was how every one told race. People of the Air Nation have grayish eyes, those of the Earth Nation had green eyes; green that ranged from the deepest emerald to the lightest lime, and those of the Fire Nation harbored goldish to orange eyes. Never blue. “She’s from the Water Nation!” That was he solution to the blue eyes she had. They reminded him of the salty waters of the ocean.
“Um…I…I can’t seem to find the…um…college.” She was stuttering. Haru thought it was cute, although he didn’t understand why she would be embarrassed.
“Well, “ He said, “You must be a student there, and from the looks of it you are not from around here are you?” He watched her shyly shake her head from side to side. “I’m a student too, I can take you if you like.”
“Ok!” He saw he shyness turn into happiness. She must have had no clue what she was going to do about getting to the campus of the college.
“I’m Haru.”
“I’m Katara.”

Haru led Katara through the streets of Omashu. He knew he was going to like Katara. She was different then any other girl he had met before. Plus she was cute too. “I have to be luckiest guy right now.” He thought, “I met a really cute girl and she’s going to the same school I am.”
Katara followed Haru. She couldn’t believe how big the city was. They walked past a library that was at least three stories high, a shopping mall that was evening bigger. She saw that the streets were full of people from all over the place, the Fire Nation, Earth Kingdom and Air Nation, but not so much from the Water Tribes. Haru led her through huge city. They traveled on the main road through the first and second branches. It seemed that Sabure Blvd. went through the whole city. “It must be the main road.” Katara thought remembering her native city of Fuyu.
The third branch was a little bit smaller than the first two. Haru told Katara that the third branch was were most of the citizens lived. It was like a huge neighbor hood. There were green trees everywhere and nice sidewalks. They walked a little until they finally reached the college campus.
“There it is.” Haru said. Katara had never seen such a huge school before. It had five different buildings that were at least six stories tall. There were made of the trade mark sandstone and had green tile roofs. Students littered the grounds, some where talking in small groups and others were sitting by themselves reading. Haru led her to the main building were she could set herself up with a dorm to live in.
“I’ll see ya later.” Haru waved to her as he left.

Katara sat on a bench outside the main building, her face buried in her palms.
“Hey. What are you doing out here?” Katara recognized the voice speaking to her. She looked up to meet the green eyes of the young man she had met earlier that day.
“Hey.” she answered back.
“What’s wrong? You sound upset.”
“I don’t have a place to live. All the dorms are full, and they said the only other option was for me to find an apartment in the city. But I have no idea how to get around, and I can’t go home.” Haru couldn’t help but feel sorry for her. He sat down next to her.
“I’m sure we can come up with something.” He said giving her a reassuring smile. She returned a weak smile. The two of them sat there for a while thinking.
“I have an idea.” Haru said
“What is it?” Katara asked.
“You can come stay with me if you like. We have an extra room you can use, and I’m sure my roommates won’t mind.” Katara looked at him. “Is he serious? He’s a guy and don’t forget about the roommates he has.” Katara thought before giving him her answer.
“Do I have a choice. I guess it wouldn’t hurt, but if I don’t like it there I’m leaving.” She stated.
“All right. We can go to my place now if you like.” Katara gave him a nod and they went to the apartment complexes in the district.

The apartment building looked like everything else, sandstone walls and a green tile roof. It was three stories tall and ivy was growing up the sides. “Looks nice.” Katara thought, following Haru inside. She looked up and saw two flights of stairs and three floors. Each floor had two doors on it, which meant two apartments on each floor. Katara followed Haru up the stairs and found that his apartment was on the second floor. He pulled a key out of his pocket on inserted it into a sliver keyhole on the doorknob. He opened the door and they went in. Katara gently shut the door behind her. The apartment was a simple one, near the entrance was a kitchen and a little ways from that was a living area. She saw a hallway to the right and guessed that is where the bathroom and bedrooms were.
“Hey I’m home.” Haru said proceeding into the kitchen. He opened the refrigerator and pulled out a can of orange soda. Katara saw that there were two people sitting in the living room, one was on a couch watching the TV and the other curled up in a chair with their face stuck in a book.
“Hey, I found someone to rent out the room we have.” Haru explained to his roommates, but Katara doubted that they were interested in his words.
“Did ya hear what I said?” Haru asked sounding a bit angry from being ignored.
“Yeah yeah, heard ya the first time. Just tell the little punk that he better not put his grubby little hands on my stuff.” The one on the couch said. Katara didn’t like that fact that he just called he a punk.
“You can tell her yourself. She’s standing in the doorway.” Haru said before sipping down the last of his soda.
The two in the living room turned to look at her. “Great! They’re all guys!” Katara shouted in her mind. She looked at them and they looked at her. She noticed that one was giving her a weird smirk and the other one went back to his book. The one sitting on the couch had shaggy brown hair and tanned skin the other in the chair had ebony black hair pulled up into a high ponytail and had pale skin.
“Ooh you picked up a chick this time.” Katara felt uneasy. The tanned kid kept staring at her.
“Yeah well don’t go scaring her off Jet.” Haru replied.
“Why would I want to scare her off. She’s pretty cute.” Jet said getting up off the couch and walking towards Katara. He was about 5’10” or so, much taller than Katara.
“So, you have a name?”
“Katara.”
“You a college kid?”
“Yes.”
“What grade?”
“Freshman.”
“Oh, I’m a Junior, that means we won’t have any classes together. That’s too bad.” There was something about him that Katara did not like. Maybe it was the look he was giving her. He seemed nice, but looks can be deceiving.
“What grade are you in Haru?” She asked looking over to the boy how was standing in the kitchen.
“Junior.” He said. “Great that’s two people older than me.” Katara thought when she noticed the other guy still sitting in the chair reading his book.
“What about him?” She asked pointing. Jet and Haru looked to whom she was pointing at.
“Oh, that’s Zuko. Real quite dude.” Jet said, “Yo! Zuko.” Zuko looked up.
“What do you want?” He asked dryly.
“Our new roommate wants to meet you.” Jet said smirking.
“That’s nice don’t care.” Zuko replied and went back to his reading.
“Gees, does he have a stick up his ass or what?” Jet said and then turned his attention back to Katara, “Don’t worry about him, he doesn’t bite. He would rather read than talk.”

Katara found the empty door to her new room. It wasn’t small, but it wasn’t big either. There was a twin-sized bed pushed up against the wall opposite of the window. There was a dresser, a night table, and a study desk. The closet was small, but Katara didn’t own a lot of clothes. It was a nice clean room. She set her bag down on the bed and went to the window. Thick dark clouds covered the sun.
“What a shame.” She said, “ It was a beautiful day out.”

That’s the end of chapter one. That was long. Wonder how Katara is going to handle being a college student and living with three men who want a piece of her.
