Author Note: I am messing with the time lines and certain events big time in this particular story. So if I have something occur before it was suppose to on the show or vice a versa, just please go with it. I promise it will all make sense… eventually. Also portions of the beginnings of this fiction you will find to be very similar to “With New Eyes” which I took down because I was just really unhappy with it.
Chapter One – New Faces and New Places
Growling softly he quickly scaled the side of an old warehouse building, spreading his wings he quickly took flight and soared away from the industrial district of the city and to a more upscale portion of Manhattan. Keeping fairly low to the ground the gargoyles’ eyes widened as he saw a young woman making her way across the street completely oblivious to the car that was about to strike her from her left side. Gliding down he quickly snatched her up into his strong arms and pulled her away from the oncoming vehicle.
Setting her gently back down on to the ground she looked up at him with frightened eyes but her reaction was very different from the usual. Instead of running in fear she stood there and continued to stare at the large creature before her with large eyes. Sighing softly Brooklyn gently caped his wings and stepped forward now worried that the woman might be in shock.
“I was only trying to help” he said softly as he eyed her warily
The sound of his softly spoken statement seemed to pull the woman from her stupor and she instinctively took a step back but still she didn’t run from the creature in front of her. Cocking her head to the side her eyes slowly began to travel up from his clawed feet to his muscled legs and thighs, his sinewy arms up to his well muscled yet lean chest. Followed by his beaked face and long flowing ivory mane. So transfixed was she with his looks that it took his softly spoken words again that drew her eyes to his.
“Oh no I totally get that and I thank you, I guess I sorta spaced there for a bit” she said chuckling nervously. “It’s just I thought you guys were legend… you know the type of stuff you only find in books and fairytales… am I dreaming all of this?” she asked with a somewhat hopeful expression.
“No you aren’t dreaming and my kind and I are very real” he said with a humorless laugh
Brooklyn watched the young woman before him with interested eyes. He never ran into another human that was so accepting to his kind before, no one except for Elisa. And even now she didn’t count so much because the affection she and Goliath shared was very obvious and it was only a matter of time before the two of them became something officially. Looking down at the woman still standing in front of him her eyes trained solely on him he couldn’t help but notice that she was actually kinda pretty… for a human anyway.
She stood to be only about 5’3 with long flowing hair as dark as the night sky and as soft as silk. It fell around her shoulders in soft waves framing her mocha toned skin causing it to glow underneath the dim street lamps. Though when the crimson colored gargoyle looked into her eyes it was them that pulled him in, dark as night they seem to be when in reality a rich chocolate brown. Shaking his head slightly he stepped forward cautiously and did something he’d never done before: he asked for her name.
“My name?” she asked softly
“Yes… do you have one?” still eyeing her
“Logan… Logan O’Roake is my name” she said softly that strange small smile still gracing her face.
“Pretty name” he murmured “A Celt then?” he asked
“Well my family is from Ireland, yes” she said chuckling softly
Nodding mostly to himself, he then pulled himself up to his full height and puffing his chest out rather proudly he claimed his family came from Scotland. Logan merely laughed at his posturing and then asked for his name in turn.
“I’m Brooklyn”
“Like the borough?” she asked confusion clearly marring her face
“Well… yes” he said uncertainly, his shoulders slumping
Logan instantly noticed this and decided to put a stop to it right there. Stepping up to him she placed a tentative hand on his shoulder and smiled softly at him.
“It’s a fine name” she said quietly
Looking up towards the sky the gargoyle could feel that sunrise was only an hour away and there was no way he was returning back to the castle tonight. He just needed to be away for awhile to get his thoughts together, to be away from his brethren. Let alone the fact he doubted he could take anymore of Angela’s and Broadway’s touchy feely displays of affection toward one another.
“You need to get inside don’t you?” she asked
“Yes… the sun…”
“I know and now with these new people… “The Quarrymen” You won’t be safe out in the open they’re smashing everything that even resembles a gargoyle. Look maybe we can help each other out. I need to get home and you need a safe place to rest during the day” she said reasonably
“Alright, where do you call home?” he asked for some reason unknown to him already trusting this human woman before him
“There…” she pointed to a large mass of land just pass the river
Brooklyn’s beak quirked up a bit at the mass of land she was pointing to. It seemed that “Brooklyn” would be spending a lot of time in Brooklyn from here on out. Shaking his head at the irony of the situation he cautiously stepped up to the young woman, still unsure as to if she would stay as calm as she had been.
“We need to get to higher ground, it’s almost impossible for me to catch an updraft this low to the streets...” he trailed off trying to explain. Seeing the confusion in her eyes he knew she was wondering how she was going to go with him. Sighing he knew it was best to just take her rather than waste time explaining. The night was fading and if they didn’t get a move on they’d both be in big trouble.
And with that he gently scooped the young woman up into his arms and told her to wrap her arms around his neck and her legs around his torso. Quickly doing as she was told Logan held on tightly as he slowly began to scale a near by building. Dark brown eyes were shut tightly as they swiftly made their way up the side of the bricked structure. Startling slightly at the soft touch of talons against her back she looked up at her companion with wide eyes.
“You’re more than welcome to stay in that position while I glide us to your home but I thought maybe I’d carry you. It might make you feel… a bit more secure. I just needed you to hold tight while I climbed the building” he explained with kind eyes
“I think I’d like that better” she said smiling shyly
He then gently gathered her into his arms and leaped off the top of the building letting the updraft do most of the work and soon they were on their way. At first Logan kept her eyes closed but soon she couldn’t help but take a look at her surroundings. She was in awe of what she saw. The bright lights of New York looked so different at this high vantage point and she watched with wide eyes as they glided over the choppy waters of the harbor. Though the fear she expect to feel wasn’t there but was replaced by Brooklyn’s strong arms wrapped around her.
“Hey we’re coming up on land, you might wanna tell me where to go next” he said jokingly
“Oh right, get close to the bridge and then we’ll go from there”
“Okay”
Turning slightly he went with the wind and easily glided inland and passed the bridge.
“See those homes right along the water there?” she asked
“Yea”
“Head that way, my apartment is near them”
Gliding fairly close to street level he soon touched ground near a rather lavish looking apartment complex. Shrugging it off he followed his companion down the quiet and darkened street their only company the various shadows that were created by the low lights of the lamp post.
“Come on, my apartment windows are mostly off to the side along with my balcony. I figure that would be the best way to get you inside without you being seen”
The soft grass rustled beneath their feet as they walked around to the side of the building hoping to make their entrance to the building a lot less noticeable. Again Brooklyn quickly scaled the building up to the top floor and hoped down on to the small balcony as gently as he could. Quickly unlocking the sliding door she quickly ushered her guest inside. She couldn’t help but notice as he eyed the place curiously.
“I know it’s not a lot but the apartment itself is pretty big and you can stretch your wings out… if you want. Ummm if you’re hungry I’ve got some food in the fridge…” she began to babble nervously
“I think I’ll be fine but do you mind if I stay here for more than just one night?”
“Oh no not at all… I mean of course. You’re more than welcome to stay here as long as you need. Believe me; I could use the company too. So I think its sort of a win/win situation” she assured him
“Okay, see you at sunset” he said with a smile
As the sun crested over the horizon and its dappled rays spilled into the room, the gothic creature with the crimson colored skin and ivory mane slowly turned to stone. Soon the stone cracked and crumbled before settling over the gargoyle. Surprisingly the dreams that filled his stone sleep were of a young human girl with charcoal colored eyes instead of a gargoyle maid with lavender wings.
The sun continued to rise over the horizon and as it filled the sky with an amber glow Logan’s companion and now new friend serenely capped his wings over his shoulders and crossed his arms over his chest before bowing his head. Shaking her head and chuckling softly to herself at the absurdity of it all she padded softly into the kitchen and pulled out a bottle of juice before sinking non too gracefully on to the couch in the living room.
Flicking on the television she glanced at the gargoyle on the opposite side of the room. She knew that she didn’t have work that day or the next considering she was still on leave but she figured she ought to get some sleep if she was going to keep up with Brooklyn that night. Lowering the television enough so only to understand the general storyline she snuggled down into the couch and instantly fell asleep. For the first time in a long while the nightmares that plagued the girl for so long did not come forth that day and instead dreams of ivory manes and crimson winged creatures filled her head.

The sky was painted in brilliant hues of pink and gold and as the sun continued to fall behind the horizon the young form curled up on the couch began to stir. The comforting blanket of sleep slowly began to slip away as she climbed back toward the world of consciousness. Rolling over as her eyes fluttered open; she awoke just in time to see her new friend awaken from his own day long sleep. Logan looked on with wide eyes as the stone that encased the gargoyle began to crack and splinter. A surprise yelped tumbled passed her lips when a loud roar filled the room and concrete shards flew threw the air.
“Whoa, okay that’s something to get used to...” the amazement clear in her voice
Brooklyn stretched his wings and yawned, he then turned toward the couch. What he saw there caused to smile just little; his new friend was curled up on the couch looking at him with wide bright eyes her hair tousled from sleep. His wings folded onto his shoulders as he moved toward the couch and eventually plopped down right next to Logan.
“So, what are you watching?” he asked
“Hum, not sure exactly, I kinda just woke up myself. I was thinking that maybe we could go get some breakfast or err… dinner or something” she laughed
“Breakfast sounds good, but I can’t exactly walk into any place and pick something up. I mean it’d be great if things actually work that way but they don’t so…” he trailed off somewhat sadly.
“Oh well, you could tell me what you want, I’ll order for both of us and we can meet up somewhere… does that sound cool to you?” she asked hopefully
“Sure, I’m game if you are” he said with a smile
“Okay… just let me get dressed and we’ll grab some food”

Sighing heavily Brooklyn stared down at the tiny girl nestled in his arms as they sat on one of the many rooftops in the area just enjoying what most would call post breakfast bliss. The early night air also added to their feelings of euphoria. It was odd, even though he’d just met this girl he couldn’t explain it but there was an overwhelming need to protect and to care for her, it was then he made it his personally responsibility to always make sure that this lovely little human in his arms was always well taken care of.
“What are you thinking about?”
Startled by the question it took him a moment to respond.
“Nothing in particular…” he murmured
“Yea right… wanna try again?” she asked with a smile
Instead of answering the gargoyle merely got to his feet pulling his companion along with him. A small rumbling growl began to form in his chest as he stretched his wings and flexed his muscles as if preparing for his real flight of the night.
“So… are you feeling adventurous this evening?” he asked mischievously.
“How adventurous?” she asked, the curiosity clearly shinning through in her voice.
“Have you ever wanted to fly?”
“Of course, all the time when I was younger; I thought it would be the greatest thing in the world to fly high among the clouds and to soar with the birds and all that other overly dramatic crap… why do you ask?” she asked with a laugh.
“Well I can’t exactly walk around… people tend to get a little over excited. So since we’re going to be spending some together I figured you might want to learn how to fly” he said with a smile
“Hum… you do realize that I’m wingless and that’s a crucial element” though sarcasm laced her voice the smile on her face let him know that she was just joking.
Sighing softly to himself he couldn’t help but shake his head slightly at her antics.
“Do you trust me?” he asked softly, his face sincere
“Yes” she whispered with little hesitation
A bright smile broke out on his face at her answer. Pulling himself up to his full height he towered over her, holding out his talon he took her hand in his and drew her close to him. He then dropped back down to his normal stance then instructed on what to do next.
“Okay I want you to come up behind me and wrap your arms around my neck” he said softly
Tentatively she stepped up behind him and loosely wrapped her arms around his neck. She then laid her head against his thick mane and waited for further instruction. Brooklyn then carefully pulled himself up to his full height.
“You okay back there?”
“Uh yea, I’m good” Logan murmured after a few shifts to get herself situated
And with that Brooklyn leapt off the five story apartment building and into the wind. Being so close to the water they caught an updraft and were quickly gliding high over the harbor. Glancing back over his shoulder he couldn’t help but chuckle at the sight of his companion. Her eyes were squeezed tightly shut, face buried in his thick mane as she hung on for dear life. This was not how envisioned this lesson, which he also hoped to be the first of many. Shaking his head he was able to free her tight grip and he looked back over his shoulder his eyes instantly finding hers.
“Look around you… it’s beautiful…” he said softly
Relaxing her grip slightly she began to look around and he was right… it was beautiful. And also very different from her flight the night before, last night she was encased in his arms and he was doing the flying. Tonight it felt almost as if she were gliding through the air on her own. The smile that broke out on her face warmed Brooklyn’s heart. Smiling to himself he decided it was time for a little fun and with a quick warning to ‘hold on tight” they were off.
The night air was crisp and the scent of the sea filled their senses. Flaring his wings and then bringing them in close to his body they barreled toward the water before he opened them again and they were climbing high into the sky once more. Logan’s laughter filled Brooklyn’s ears as they headed toward the bright Manhattan skyline.
Although Logan weighed practically nothing all of the extra flying with the added weight was quickly tiring Brooklyn out. Deciding quickly he easily brought them down atop one of the taller buildings in the area. Laughing joyfully Logan let unlocked her arms from around his neck and slipped down onto her own feet.
“Wow… that was amazing!” she exclaimed
“And that was just your first lesson… I’m glad you liked it though” he said smiling somewhat shyly
Bounding over to the gargoyle Logan wrapped her arms around his middle while looking up at him with wide eyes. She then leaned up and pressed a soft kiss to his cheek and whispered a ‘thank you’. In response Brooklyn let his wings encircle her sheltering her slight form from the winds.
“Well we have the whole night ahead of us… so you get to choose the next adventure”
A mischievous smirk curled on her lips and Brooklyn couldn’t help the feeling that giving this diminutive creature in front of him free reign was not one of his more brilliant ideas.
“I want to go back in time” she exclaimed
“… Back in time” he murmured softly.
His lashes fluttered shut as he remembered a moment in time that seemed so long ago, When he had found ‘The Cloisters’, it was the only place that has felt like home. His eyes snapped open and with a grin he hoisted her back up into his arms and took off from the building without a word.
Logan took in the night life of the city with wide eyes never having been able to see at such a vantage point before. It wasn’t long before Brooklyn brought his wings close to his body and sent his body barreling down towards the streets below. Shrieking in surprise and just a bit of fear Logan pressed her face into his neck while gripping his mane tightly. Chuckling at her reaction it wasn’t long before he brought them to a halt.
“You can open your eyes now” he whispered softly
Dark eyes fluttered open before gasping in surprise. Brooklyn then gently set down his precious cargo as she took in the scene with wide eyes. Taking a step away from him Logan slowly began to take in their surroundings. Brooklyn had brought them to one of the lush courtyards within The Cloisters. All that could really be heard was the gentle sound of running water from a fountain nearby; even the loud and boisterous sounds of the city had trouble penetrating the sanctuary.
“Gods it really is like going back in time” she whispered softly
Brooklyn made a soft sound of agreement before silently coming up behind her. Noticing her shiver slightly whether it was from the chill in the night air, the cool water nearby or a combination of both he immediately wrapped his arms around her waist before bring his wings around to shield them both.
“Do you like it?” he asked quietly
Turning in his embrace she moved to face him and looked up at him curiously.
“Like it?”
“Yea, you said you wanted to go back in time… did I do okay?” he asked shyly
“More than okay” she said nodding with a giggle
After a few moments of comfortable silence Logan began to wiggle free of Brooklyn’s embrace. Eagerly she reached out and took his talon in her hand before dragging him along.
“C’mon lets go exploring” she exclaimed excitedly
Brooklyn merely laughed at her antics and allowed her to drag him along behind her. And that was how both spent a good part of the evening into early night. Childish games of tag and hide-and-go-seek were played. It reminded Brooklyn of his younger days with his rookery brothers and Logan of times long past.
It was during a game of tag that caused the rest of the evening to go sour.
Logan was slowly making her way through one of the outdoor corridors of a courtyard when she spotted an overly large shadow just around the bend. Smirking slyly to herself believing that she would’ve finally caught her playmate for the evening. Not once did it occur to her that someone other than themselves.
Biting her lip softly to stifle the giggles threatening to break through she lunged forward and wrapped her arms around his neck shouting – “gotchya” – before she could register what was happening she was thrown from the shadow violently as a beastly roar filled the night air.
From her position now on the cold stone of the ground Logan now trembling with fear looked up with tear filled eyes. Whoever it was that she had playfully tackled was not her Brooklyn. Groaning her body hit the stone hard and she slipped to the cool ground with a soft thud. Brooklyn’s ears perked up at the scuffling across the courtyard and without hesitation he propelled his body forward, his wings stretched out behind him allowing him to glide though low to the ground.
Coming to a stop his eyes widened and his breath caught in his throat at the scene before him. Logan lay on the ground unconscious a large shadow looming over her and without another thought he attacked.
“Get away from her!” he growled his eyes glowing brilliantly
The large shadow groaned loudly at the impact but quickly regrouped and flung Brooklyn off with ease while letting out a beastly roar of its own. Snarling Brooklyn landed on all fours not affected in the least and growled low in his throat in response before moving in again. It was only when a large talon wrapped around his wrists and a low rumbling voice that sounded familiar did he pause and look up at whom it was he was fighting.
“Goliath…” he whispered
“Of course it’s me… Brooklyn… what is the matter with you? Why on earth would you attack me?” he asked reasonably though he still kept a firm hold on the younger gargoyle’s wrists
Before he could respond he caught sight of a smaller moving towards Logan.
“She’s hurt… I think she needs a doctor” said the shadow
Brooklyn immediately recognized the voice belonging to one Elisa Maza. Shaking free of Goliath’s grip he quickly made his way to Logan’s side effectively shoving Elisa out of the way. Snarling softly – “don’t touch her” – as he gently gathered her into his arms. Elisa made another move toward the gargoyle but hesitated when he snarled violently and his tail whipped around viscously to snake around her wrist and fling her to the ground.
Turning to face the stunned detective and leader of his clan with wild eyes he hesitated for a moment before turning on heel and running in the opposite direction. He easily jumped the stone wall and within moments a shadowy figure could be seen taking flight as it rose higher and higher into the sky.
A soft groan caused Goliath to tear his eyes away from the skies and he quickly rushed over to Elisa’s side. After helping her to her feet both ventured out of the outdoor corridor and into the outer courtyard. Elisa stretched a few sore muscles out her eyes trained on Goliath while his still looked up at the night sky.
“What the hell was that?” she asked softly
“I do not know but he certainly was concerned about the human he had with him… and for Brooklyn to take…such an interest is peculiar in itself” he rumbled softly
“Yea… what happened to her anyway? Why was she on he ground and unconscious for that matter? From Brooklyn’s reaction I highly doubt it was him that put her in that state…” she trailed off as she saw a flash of guilt gross the large lavender gargoyles face.
“I fear that I am to blame for that. She attacked me from behind… it was instinct…” he trailed off knowing that his excuse was weak at best.
“It wasn’t your fault… mistakes can happen” she said reaching to rub his forearm comfortingly. “So… should we follow them?” she asked her eyes now focused back on the skies.
“No… not tonight anyway, it is clear that Brooklyn does not desire our company at this moment in time. The girl also seemed to be safe with him despite his behavior… we also do not know where they are headed or if we will be welcomed there and with only a few hours until sunrise… it’s not a risk I’m willing to take. We do know that he is alright and from the looks of things he had a place to roost during the day… we will take up the search again tomorrow night. Brooklyn is my second in command and still apart of the clan, he will return…eventually” he said heaving a large sigh.
With that he reached for Elisa and scooped her up into his embrace, he too easily scaled the stoned wall and the pair were soon taking flight. Although both were silent they seemed to be sharing the same thoughts.
-- Who was that girl? And what is she too Brooklyn? --
