Prowl sat cross-legged in his usual mediation pose, his optics were off and all his other senses relaxed but alert. From his spot on the floor he could hear Bumblebee and Sari fighting over a video game they were playing; no doubt Bumblebee thought his loss was unfair.
He tried to ignore the shouting and focus on the soft twittering of birds in the tree he was facing. Optimus had told him many times to pick a different room, one without a tree growing out of the floor, but every time he was asked he declined. This room was so him; somewhere that nature and machine became one, just like the team he was part of.
The sound of a laughing mech running down the hall dragged him back to reality, with an exasperated sigh he turned his optics back online and frowned. Even in his own room he was a prisoner to the noises of life.
“Prowl? Prowl you in here?”
Although Prowl liked his team he hated the fact that none them really understood him, he didn’t think he was hard to get to know. Bumblebee was the worst, he constantly picked on the motorbike mech for not ‘being in tune with the modern world’, being antisocial and a million other things he had randomly decided Prowl was.
Standing up he stretched his arms over his head and groaned softly, answering Bumblebee in an exhausted voice.
The yellow bot burst into the room with a huge smile on his face, “Sari’s gonna teach us this new game called hockey, you wanna play?”
Prowl turned his back to Bumblebee and looked up the trunk up the tree, shaking his head slightly, “No.”
“Oh come on! I swear by the allspark you’re grumpier than Ratchet sometimes. You need to loosen up and stop being so….so……BORING!”
Prowl turned and raised an optic ridge at Bumblebee, trying hard to keep his face impassive so the other mech wouldn’t know what he was feeling inside, Bumblebee would never see just how much he amused the sleek autobot.
He had always secretly liked the smaller mech, probably more than he should as a team mate, although he would never admit it to anyone. Bumblebee was always so carefree and passionate about what he wanted, everything was a game to him and he hated to loose them, he was everything Prowl wasn’t and the motorbike couldn’t help but feel slightly jealous.
It wasn’t as if he had a bad personality, he was quiet and never spoke unless he needed to but when he spoke he was always polite and helpful. He tried to see the good in everything, Bumblebee once said that if Prowl tried hard enough he could see the good in Megatron, the comment had made Prowl smile; although it was faint enough so the other bots wouldn’t see it.
“Boring eh?”
“Yes boring. You never play video games with us; you don’t come play the games Sari teaches us, you never join in with anything. All you do is sit in here and stare at the tree. Would it really kill you to loosen up? Or are you scared you’ll loose a game to me?” Bumblebee smirked, wondering for a second if it was wise to be playing chicken with a ninja.
Prowl shook his head in amusement, “I don’t come because I’m afraid I’ll show you up, I know how much you love winning and being beaten by a boring, old ninja bot might just cramp your over enthusiastic style.”
“You think your so much better than me, but your not! Just because you went and learned to become a ninja and I didn’t.” Bumblebee pouted. “I’ve proved plenty of times I can hold my own in a fight.”
“I never said you couldn’t hold your own and I never said you couldn’t fight. Stop twisting what I say.” The taller mech crossed his arms over his chest, starting to get agitated. “Your temper is to short sometimes, you need to calm yourself.”
Bumblebee stomped his foot childishly, “Are you picking on my height again?”
Prowl couldn’t help but chuckle, his mouth caught in a tight smile. “You should use your size to your advantage, you’re small and fast so you should also be nimble.”
“NO! NO! NO! Don’t pull your ninja training manual out on me again.” Bumblebee raised his hands up in defeat, “it’s sunny outside and I want to play with Sari and you if you’ll come, I don’t want my CPU to fry from boredom.”
Prowl smiled and leaned back against the tree, crossing his arms over his chest, he knew the little car would make him go play eventually, but he enjoyed making Bumblebee fight him, it was all part of his personality glitch. “I’ll make you a deal.”
Bumblebee’s mouth formed a perfect little ‘O’ and he looked up expectantly at the taller mech. “Is it the kind of deal that ends with me winning a years supply of delicious axel grease?”
“Not exactly,” Prowl answered with a smile. “If you let me teach you to use your size to your advantage then I’ll let you teach me to…uhhhh…..play.”
Bumblebee grinned, “Deal.” Anything that would keep him in the elder mechs company was good in his opinion. He got the added bonus of seeing Prowl in action when he had his lesson as well, he’d never admit it but Prowl had some pretty slick moves and the way he made that thin frame move so fluidly made his circuits fizzle.
With a curt nod Prowl uncrossed his arms and placed his hands on his hips, “So what’s this game about then?”
Bumblebee shrugged, “No idea, but it involves a ball and sticks. Sari made it sound really fun.” Turning on his heels he ran from the room, shouting down the hall he had accomplished the impossible and Prowl was going to play hockey. The motorbike followed him almost silently, only the soft click of his metal feet on the concrete feet could be heard.
Outside the building Bumblebee had already grabbed a traffic sign and was knocking a tennis ball around the courtyard, using his wheels like a pair of skates. The sun shone bright in the cloudless, azure sky, Prowl smiled as it streamed across his face and warmed his cold metal body.
“Prowl your really gonna play with us?” Sari ran over and looked up at him excitedly, he nodded slightly in response.
It took about five minutes for Sari to explain the rules when all she really had to say was ‘get ball in net with stick,’ It would have saved both mechs a lot of confusion.
----------------
It surprised Prowl when he realised just how much he’d enjoyed the game, maybe Bumblebee was right and he did need to chill out more. The thoughts stunned him, he had always preferred his own company over anything else but all of a sudden he wanted to be social, he could only blame that on the yellow mech.
Bumblebee had dived for the ball during the game and tripped over his feet, he skidded into the net on his chest, taking the ball with him to score a goal. Prowl had tried not to laugh but inside he was in hysterics, the more he tried to hide the laugh the more it wanted to come out. When the laugh escaped it was so loud that Sari stared at him in shock, before looking back to her best friend. “I think Prowl’s lost it”
“Lost what?” Bumblebee said as he stood up and dusted himself off, not understanding the comment.
“He’s gone nuts.” She replied, looking back at the still chuckling mech.
“He’s nuts, bolts and sheets of metal.” He said looking very confused. “Were machines remember?”
Sari shook her head and sighed, “never mind.”
The game finished not long after Prowl’s outburst, mostly because the two mechs had turned competitive and each refused to loose. The game had ended with Prowl a few goals up from Bumblebee, much to the yellow mechs disappointment. He would prank Prowl later to get some revenge.
Bumblebee and Sari had returned to their video game, leaving Prowl in peace to sit in his tree and meditate.
