Summary:

Two years after the final battle the fire lords bride to be dies in a tragic accident when Azula escapes from prison. Zuko calls everyone back for Mai?s funeral, and to discuss plans on recapturing his insane sister. When everyone arrives Zuko is surprised by how everyone has grown up especially a certain young earthbender. Will the fire lord be able to love again after his first loves demise? Chapter One: Azulas Escape and Mais Death
Mai was going to the boiling rock to visit Azula like she did every month, though she herself didn?t understand why. Ty Lee was supposed to meet her by the fire benders cell in around a half an hour. The black haired queen to be sighed and thought about Zuko and the fight they had that morning.
?Why must you risk yourself every month to go and see that raving lunatic?!? Zuko fumed as Mai began fixing her hair.
?She was once my friend! Ty Lee and I go see her for fear of not seeing her.? Mai stated coolly in her ?shut up or I shall throw daggers? at you voice. Zuko paced angrily around the room his robe falling off one shoulder as he walked slightly flailing his arms. In her mirror she could see the sharp outline of his collar bones, the firmness of his chest muscles, and the sleek definition of his abs as his robe started falling away more. Mai blushed for looking at him and began to finish her hair.
?Azula still holds the both of you captive with fear! I can tell!? Zuko stopped behind her and slammed his fist down on her oak armoire which shook almost everything off it and into the floor. Her makeup and brushes and other accessories clinked softly as the landed, rolled, and bounced off of the marble floor making a rather large mess when her perfume bottles broke. Zuko was still fuming when Mai began to get up and clean the mess.
?We only go to make sure she is being treated correctly, and to see that she hasn?t escaped Zuko. You don?t have to destroy my things to get you?re point across. I know you don?t want me to go, and I know that you?re worried. I?ll be fine. I promise.? Mai stood up holding everything that wasn?t broken or soaked in perfume. Zuko relaxed his shoulders and stood stooped over for a moment before straitening up and fixing his clothes so that his skin wasn?t ravaged by the cold that had flooded the palace in the night.

He then turned to her and blushed sheepishly scratching the back of his head. He then helped her put her things back where they belonged and gave her a sweet kiss.
?I?m sorry I just don?t know what I would do if something happened to you down there.? he held Mai tightly to him taking in the smell of her hair and the touch of his lips against hers.
The gondola stopped and she waited patiently for the doors to slide open. ?ugh? I hate this place!? She thought as she stepped out into the steamy volcano that was boiling rock. Reaching towards her face she removed a stray hair and asked a guard for a escort to princess Azula?s cell. The guard complied and they moved along the stone walkway of the steam pit into the much cooler hall ways of the containment blocks.
The place seemed stained red by the lights hung in Azula?s block. Mai was a little tense before these reunions with the princess. They had a special containment block made just for Azula. Also a special jacket had been invented so Azula could no longer harm herself or others, they called it a straight-jacket. She and the guard walked along silently until they came to the cell door. There Ty Lee stood in her Kyoshi warrior uniform. At the sight of Mai the warrior got a big smile on her face and rushed forward to give her a large hug. Though Mai was still not to fond of affection she gave in none the less.
?How have you been Ty Lee?? Mai asked looking her old friend over. Every time they met now Ty Lee always looked slightly different. ?Something on her grows every time I see her.? Mai thought slightly jealous.
?I?m fine Mai-mai! How are you and Lord Zuko? Still getting married next month?? Ty Lee asked with excitement her bosoms bouncing around under her green uniform showing their excitement too.
?Yes we are. Now can we get this over with? I know it was my idea but I have a big dinner to prepare for tonight and not much time?? Mai was cut off by a loud noise in Azula?s cell. The princess was laughing her same maniacal laugh.
?Too bad Mai? No dinner for you! No dinner for Ty Lee or sweet darling ZuZu either! Wedding bells shall never ever ring for you or my imperfect brother either!? Azula screamed out. She did this every time they came. The dinner bit was new though. There was another strange noise in Azula?s cell.
?Azula are you okay?? Mai asked just before the door slid open and something soaked in blood was hurled out of it. The guard ran at the door quikly to close it but was to late. Mai and Ty Lee readied themselves but Azula was different now. She was changed.
?Azula! Get back in your cell? Now!? Ty Lee cried out in warrior stance. Mai slid her knives out of her sleeves and in between her fingers. Azula was ragged and smelled like blood and looked as if she had been bathing in it. There was a look in her eye both of them had never seen. It was like she was looking through them.
?Neither of you have the skills to defeat me!? She screamed and with a swift kick to the temple Ty Lee was out for the count. ?I didn?t expect a Kyoshi warrior to be taken down so easily!? The guard, scared out of his wits, had already ran for assistance. ?Now Mai, you were the one who wanted to join our little family. ZuZu told you about what our father did to our mother right? Banished her because she protected him! Father meant to have her killed all along! Now you will take the full brunt of her punishment!?
Mai was fast she slung knives at Azula one cutting off a bit of hair the other some of her clothes and a few more nicking the skin of her legs and arms. She began to ready more but the princess was more powerful. Azula spun quickly dodging the new knives and caught Mai in the stomach with her elbow knocking her down. Mai got up as fast as she could doing a leg sweep s she did so but the princess leapt over it. Grabbing one of the knives that had fallen to the floor Azula tackled the girl she once called friend held her by twisting the back of her hair and holding a knife to her throat.
?If father and I aren?t going to be a part of this family no one is.? She spat into the girls ear twisting and pulling her hair even harder. She slowly started pushing the blade point first into the flesh of Mai?s neck. Mai didn?t dare try to struggle hopping the guards would get there in time to save her. The point started piercing the surface Azula watched and licked her lips in pleasure waiting to taste her sweet red victory. ?I?m sorry Zuko? I love you!? Mai screamed out in her thoughts as the blade plunged in and then out of her jugular. As her brothers fiancé lay dieing on the hallway floor the princess picked up Ty Lee?s limp body and made her way out of her prison licking the blade that took Mai?s life.

At the palace night was a approaching as a black seal hawk flew into the guard tower closest to the Fire Lord?s chambers. Kiya the night guard read the scroll and ran as fast as possible to her Lord?s chambers before the banquet was to begin. Breaking through the doors unannounced she caught Zuko in a state of undress.
?Kiya! What do you think you are?? he stopped shouting when he saw what was in her hands. Grabbing a robe he covered himself a stole the scroll from the guards hands. As he read the words on the page insurmountable rage filled him, but so did overwhelming sadness. ?Mai?? he whispered and fell to his knees. Kiya went and closed the doors to the Fire Lords chambers and began trying to console the distraught man.
?Azula why?!? He asked aloud. ?WHY!??
