With Arnold’s help, Clover was able to win the election for homecoming queen. Clover was very ecstatic at first, triumphing over Mandy made her feel all really great and getting the captain of the football team to accompany her to the parade would be icing on the cake. She was cozying up to him when Arnold told her that she promised to go out with him for this day at least if he secured his part of the deal. Clover can do nothing but complied, not willingly of course because she does not really like the blonde geek. Nope, she did not like him, not at all.
The two of them walked side by side as Arnold made it a point to flaunt clover around. He got eager hoots and whistles urging them on.
“Most probably from his fellow geeks no doubt”, Clover thought. “My gosh, this is so humiliating. Imagine me, Clover, homecoming queen, going out with a…GEEK? Mandy would never let me live it down nor would Alex and Sam. They’d be laughing their ass off because of this fiasco.”
Clover could only look at the smiling Arnold, who was really quite full of himself.
“So where we going, lover?” Clover sarcastically remarked, hoping this would turn the boy off and let her off the hook easy.
Arnold only look at her with that same goofy look for a half minute or so before replying.”It’s a surprise,” he said. Smiling even wider this time.
Clover rolled her eyes in exasperation. She could very well kick his ass if she was not the type to value her word. Besides even if she did, Sam and Alex would get on her case if she decided to kick this doofus’ ass. Her vanity can be her downfall sometimes, she mused as she went along with Arnold’s every turn and step, not even bothering, to look at where they were going.
They arrived at a restaurant several blocks away from school. Arnold made it a point that Clover was not to use her car or anyone else’s. It was so that a lot more people can see them together, that sadistic freak.
Arnold found them a good seat by the window and talked to the lady at the counter. He seemed really chummy with her.
“An aunt or his mother maybe” Clover guessed out of boredom. Quite frankly, she does not like the place. It looks to drab for her to be in it. She was whining about the design of the restaurant when Arnold sat down beside her.
“Umm…Clover. I hope you’re not angry” Arnold said as he looked at the blond beside him glare at him with irritation in her eyes.
“Of course, I’m angry. Who wouldn’t be?” Clover spat at him. “This is so going to ruin my reputation!” She added as she spun her head away from him, accentuating her disgust.
“Please, Clover, I know it was rude of me to treat you like that, but you’ve got to admit you can be pretty rude to me” he reasoned in his most pathetic manner, hoping she could at least feel guilty for her own trespasses.
“Yeah, so?” Clover replied with a smug look on her face, slowly raising one eyebrow before facing Arnold with one of her most insulting of poses. She really wants to piss him off now.
“I just want to go out with you, that’s all.” He smiled, faking confidence as he looked at her straight in the eye.
“Well, I don’t want to go out with you.” Clover remarked, emphasizing the ‘don’t’ and ‘you’.
“Does not matter, a promise is a promise” Arnold smiled, seeking solace on that fact. He held her hand, which she tried to retract but couldn’t because he was too quick for her. “Look, Clover, just give me a chance, okay? All I want is this date. Nothing more. In fact after this date, you can go home or go back to your friends, Sam and Alex. Deal?”
“Ooookaaay…” Clover rolled her eyes as if to indicate she doesn’t care.
“Excellent!” Arnold exclaimed before standing up and going back to the counter.
Clover’s eyes followed him as he once again exchanged a few words with the lady in the counter. She raised an eyebrow, when Arnold came back with his order.
“Who’s that? Your girlfriend?” She insultingly joked.
“No, my mom.” He smiled as he hand her a strawberry shake, a burger, and a plate of fries.
“I was right!” Clover guffawed. “There is no way, you can ever have a girlfriend”
“...”
“At least, not the ones you didn’t forced” She added, feeling a lot more bitchier than usual. She smiled once again, with that insulting smile of hers.
This made Arnold looked at her with a very angry look. It was the most scariest look she ever seen in her life. Not even any of the villains they fought as spies for the WOOHP organization can scare her like that. Clover shut her mouth that instant. Her insulting expression turned to one of that of a fearful girl.
They both ate their meal in silence. The meal proved to be delicious, the burger was done just the way Clover would have wanted it, the strawberry shake was not to sweet, and the fires not too salty. Clover enjoyed the meal but her expression sure did not show it. She was a bit fearful of that last look Arnold gave her.
She was looking out of the window, trying to avoid his eyes when Arnold tapped her shoulder. She turned her head ever slowly, only to be met with Arnold’s smiling face.
“Clover I want you to meet my mom” He said.
“Okay, Arnold. Whatever you say.” Clover fearfully complied, as she walked with him towards the lady at the counter.
She was greeted with a smile and a very friendly hello. Arnold’s mom looked a lot like him. Blonde hair. Glasses. But she was really pretty in person to bore a son as boring as Arnold.
“So, you’re Clover?” Arnold’s mom remarked. “You’re really pretty. My son told me great things about you. He must really like you, to bring you here. My son as you may know, is ladies man and he does not like the fact that his mother cramps his style, so he keeps his relationships in secret, not that I would not know anyway.” She prattled.
Arnold’s mom kept on talking and talking with Clover acting as if she was listening, She could really care less about the false information Arnold’s mom knew about her own son but whatever, it’s not her problem anyway.
“Yeah right, lady. More like, ladies’ dork” Clover wanted to say but couldn’t because Arnold looked at her with a steely yet non-threatening gaze. Clovers merely kept silent and nod her head at the older woman’s remarks.
Arnold interrupted “So mom, I believe me and Clover have to get home by now. We’ve got schoolwork to do and we intend to finish it. I’ll just accompany Clover home. So’ I’ll see you later okay?”
Arnold dashed out with Clover in a flash, his face reddening with embarrassment.
“You told your mom, THAT?” Clover tried to joke after a long period of silence. Hoping this would ease the tension building up from several minutes ago.
“No…”Arnold replied, loosening up, his face still red from embarrassment. “I’ve never told her that I’m a chick magnet. She made it all up. Maybe she was thinking I would be like dad or something. Nope, not me, to quote you: There is no way, you can ever have a girlfriend at least, not the ones you didn’t forced”
He sighed as he said that last part. Clover felt really bad because she had hurt his feelings. She looked at him with a tinge of pity in her eyes. She seriously wanted to say her apologies but couldn’t at first, but later on she gave in to her nagging guilt.
“Arnold, look, I’m sorry for all those things I’ve said earlier. And all that nasty things I do. I know I shouldn’t have promised to go out with you and all if I know I would not be able to properly hold my end of the bargain. So let me tell you this, you don’t look that bad to get a girlfriend. I’m sure there are a lot of girls who would like to go out with you. If and only if, you learn to refine yourself by socializing more.” Clover replied, regaining a little bi of her original composure. Feeling sorry for Arnold made her forget about the scary look he gave her that she patted his shoulder.
Arnold looked at her, all confused by her last statements. “How?”
“Easy” Clover smiled at him with a wry grin. “You’ll need a total make over.”
“A what?” Arnold’s eyes bulged at the mention of the words ‘make over’. “Clover you’re joking, right? I’m a guy. Guys don’t do make overs.”
“Well, if you don’t want to help me then I won’t” Clover said as she turned around. “Thanks for the food, Arnold” She shouted without looking back.
“Oh no, you don’t” Arnold shouted as he raced up to her and held her shoulder. He spun her around and said to her, “Our date’s not over yet. I still have some plans for tonight.”
Clover’s jaw dropped. “Eeehh? I thought the meal was the ‘date’?”
“Well, at first that was supposed to be the end of it. But you’ve given me an idea…” Arnold remarked with a really huge embarrassing embarrassed-smile.
“Great. Me and my big mouth.” Clover said aloud. “What now? You better not be thinking of doing something naughty or I’ll so kick your butt!” She warned.
“No. Not anything like that” Arnold replied as he slowly reddened again. “I would like to take your offer on that make over thing you wanted to do to me, strating right now.”
Clover blinked her eyes for a few seconds in disbelief before shouting out in joy of the prospect of helping out Arnold, effecting what she perceives as vindication for all the bad things she had done to him as well as the prospect of using Arnold to lure away Mandy from David. Man, would this be ever so sweet! Vindication and a red herring!
