I had a lot of driving to do this past weekend, and I figured that if you were willing to listen to "Tribal Warfare" and "Conscious Sedation," then I could give "The Dark Side of the Bright Side" a shot during my trip.
First, you tell the entire story in Ruby's voice. This, as I noted regarding Spazzgirl Letters, is impressive, even if this isn't exactly the Ruby we know.
Second, despite the alternate-universe setting, I found most of the characters' behavior to be at least plausible from what we've seen in canon (with the major exception of Skull Boy). It seemed natural for Ruby to find joy in her work -- even sex-work -- and to form good relationships with her regular clients. And it figures that extreme-sports enthusiast Iris would like extreme sex, too. (I loved seeing her get triple-fucked and still be horny enough to masturbate afterward.) I was a little less sold on Misery's behavior, but I also got the impression that her background in this universe deviates more sharply from her canonical one than those of most of the other characters. And that healing veil of hers would explain how she's managed to survive so many deadly disasters in canon.
Third, I was impressed that you managed make sex with a skeleton sound hot instead of just awkward and uncomfortable. I particularly liked Skull Boy's detached finger stimulating Ruby anally during their tryst. And I was amused by the whole ED-like situation that arises when his bones go rubbery in chapter 3.
I also liked the last chapter because you took the opportunity to resolve a couple of big unanswered questions from the show: what Doom Kitty's key is for, and where Skull Boy came from. But you didn't answer what I consider the biggest question, which is why this version of Skull Boy is so different from the canon one. If he was made to be Ruby's protector, what made him turn violent and greedy? Did the spell that created him go wrong in this universe? Some explanation for his uncharacteristic behavior would have really put a bow on top of the ending. But I was still happy that he got what was coming to him -- a "fitting" end, you might say. :)

This was amazingly good. Ruby's attitude of being both happy with her lot in life mixed with her fear of what could happen if she displeased Skullboy gave the story such a great atmosphere. The uncertainty really helps build the excitement when reading, making it that much more enjoyable. I absolutely love this story and can't wait to read the rest of it.

Hi there. First of all let me tell you that your fanfic is awesome, well written, good rythm, hot, creepy, etc. A very good fanfic. But i didn't like it even if i know that your fanfic is very well done.
The thing is that Skull Boy is one of my favorite characters in Ruby Gloom, and even if he is kind of psycho in the books and kind of paranoid in the tv series, it didn't feel right, not for me at least. it was a big let down watching hime acting that way with his friends, and i ended not liking your fanfic.
Anyway, you are a very good writer with a lot of talent.
By the way, my english writing skills are lame so it is understanble if this review doesn't make any sense LOL.

Ruby is adorable. Even throughout her ordeals she is so even keeled.

I like the way you explained Skullboy, I know the images from this cartoon but not the story line. It was very helpful to have the scene in place that detailed him falling apart after a collision, it put into reference how his body, er frame as it were, worked.

Isis came up with such a great plan to rid them all of him. I liked it a lot. As sexy as the story is, it would have been a bit uneasy for him to have the upper hand still at the end of it.

This review is for Chapter Two!

Now this was an emotional roller coaster of a chapter! Right from the beginning, we get a nice dose of warm fuzzies with Ruby waking up with Doom Kitty, touched with a soft spoonful of melancholy as we learn a little something about Ruby�s past and how she came to be alone in that big old mansion.

But then you just pull the rug out from under us with the confrontation between Iris and Skullboy and it�s aftermath. Large bonus points, by the way, for finally giving the world an explanation of how a skeleton gets his game on�it was a very creative solution, and you even went the extra mile, showing how such an experience would so differ from a flesh and blood partner. I found the whole scene mesmerizing, especially coming as it did right on the heels of the violence towards Iris. I find myself wondering if Skullboy came up as an attempt to Ruby�s fears, reassert his control or just vent his frustrations�probably, it was a combination of all three. The more he�s in this story the more I�m impressed at what a nasty character you�ve turned him into!

Again it�s Ruby who steals the show, her chillingly accurate portrayal of a traumatized victim somehow running side by side with her stubborn optimism. I�ve been a fan of Ruby�s for years, but never more have I wanted to snuggle her to my chest and tell her it�s all going to be okay! And then, just as things seem to settling down, you throw Misery back at us�poor, poor Misery.

As scary and sad as that scene was, I loved seeing how Iris and especially Ruby were so desperately trying to make their friend safe. And so much foreshadowing here, yet again. Misery won�t hurt herself�but who might she get to hurt her instead? And what other secrets might her mysterious veil hold?

I loved how the girls fled the mansion and found solace in such a child-like activity as berry gathering, using their fun to put a bandage on all of the terrible things that had happened. I actually found myself liking your portrayal of Iris a lot here�her mollycoddling (LOVE that word) to me said that she really didn�t know how to handle the situation until she really thought Misery was okay, showing a vulnerability that I thought was totally in character for her.

And of course the final love scene ended the chapter on such a delightful note! Again, I have to say how impressed I was from a technical standpoint�the girls were doing some pretty advanced moves there, and you managed to describe the action without ever sounding confusing or becoming too clinical. I was right there with them the whole time, and there�s no place I�d rather be! Misery�s awkwardness was a snuggably-cute counterpoint to Iris� energy, and I loved Ruby�s unexpected aggressiveness towards Misery�it was surprising, believable and above all, hot! (And another bit of foreshadowing? Time will tell!) Without a doubt one of the most delicious threesome scenes I�ve read, and a perfect way to end the chapter. In the afterglow you managed to lap back around to the warm and fuzzy feelings we started on, and I am certainly primed and ready to see what comes next!

Firstly, I was the proofreader for this story, and secondly this review is for the first chapter specifically.

This was a great Ruby Gloom story, erotic or otherwise. All of the characters remained intact, with a change in tone to their personalities that fit the setting perfectly. Skullboy�s habits are chillingly subverted, making him genuinely sinister and more than a little scary! Iris is just as adventurous and tirelessly enthusiastic with her work in the bedroom as she is in her play. Misery remains as quietly sardonic and resigned as ever, but with a decidedly more intense and even creepy edge.

But of course it�s Ruby who really steals the show. She�s as cute as ever, and her endless optimism and cheerfulness always asserts itself. But that lends the story a decidedly melancholy feel, as the reader understands the reality of Ruby�s situation even if she doesn�t.

The first sex scene is hot and heavy, but spiked with a little thrill of nervousness thanks to the out-of-control action, couple with the grim hints of consequences to come. And those hints beat fruit in the emotional gutpunch of a scene immediately after, where Skullboy really comes into his own as an object of menace. (Oooo, how I hate him in this story!)

Counterpoint that to Iris� scene, which is a welcome dose of unleavened fun. (With an opportunity for bonus points for those who can identify the cameo!) Action-wise, you know it�s not to my particular tastes, but I can just soak up Iris� enjoyment, and it goes a long way to lessening the sting of what came before!

And finally we come to Misery�s scene, which has little you can hold onto at the time, but is just full of foreshadowing of what�s to come�although foreboding might be a better term! And personally I just loved the sensual feel of Misery�s almost-dance as she wove her veil around Ruby.

It�s a steamy, intensely emotional story, but seeing it through the lens of Ruby�s eternal optimism make it far more enjoyable than the straight angst-fest it might have been otherwise. Really, the first person perspective was the perfect choice here. I really enjoyed it, and I can�t wait to see how things end up!
