“Hey, Lame-O,” Ronnie Anne said, her smiling face on the screen of Lincoln’s laptop. “How’s it going?
“Pretty good. How was your week?”
“Not bad. Hung out with the guys at the skate park, put in a few hours at the bodega with Bobby…pretty much just killing time ‘til school starts in a couple weeks. Oooh, hey, check this out.”
She reached down and pulled up a spiral pad with a pencil drawing on it.
“It’s a sketch of a mural I want to do on the back of my apartment building. I’m hoping the super okays it, but if not, I could paint it somewhere else.”
“Wow, it looks great! I love the skateboarding pigeon.”
“Thanks! It’s supposed to be kind of a symbol of the neighborhood.”
“Cool.”
After a moment, Lincoln asked, “So, can I ask you a question?”
“Sure.”
“What are we now? Are we…a couple?”
Ronnie Anne was quiet for a moment. Then she said, “Remember how we used to tell people that we weren’t boyfriend and girlfriend?”
“Yeah?”
“Well, I can only speak for myself here, but I didn’t say that because I wasn’t into you. I said it because I didn’t want other people sticking a label on what we are. I mean, that should be for us to decide, right?”
“Yeah,” Lincoln said, nodding slowly. “You know, now that I think about it, that’s why I did it, too. We shouldn’t have to decide between being friends and being boyfriend and girlfriend. I mean, why shouldn’t we just be what we are? Whatever that is?”
“Exactly,” Ronnie Anne replied. “I mean, we’re kids; we’ve got all the time in the world to decide what we’re gonna be.”
“Yeah,” Lincoln said. Then he grinned at Ronnie Anne and said, “Even if it’s something…physical.”
Ronnie Anne smiled slyly. “Oh yeah? Well, what physical thing would you do if you were here right now?”
Lincoln smiled wickedly and begin, “Well, first, I’d unzip that purple hoodie…”
