Chapter 9
Candace and Jeremy reached Stacy’s front door at nearly the same time. Jeremy’s hand hovered in front of the doorbell as Candace stepped up onto the front porch.
“So,” he said, “do you know why Stacy wanted us to come over?”
“No,” Candace replied. “After we left the cave, she was really quiet on the ride home, and her phone’s been going right to voicemail ever since. And when I called her house yesterday, Dr. Hirano just said that Stacy ‘needed some alone time.’ Honestly, it’s kind of freaking me out.”
Jeremy rang the bell, and Stacy opened the door a few seconds later.
“Hey, guys,” she said soberly. “Come on in.”
Stacy led them into the living room and sat down. Candace and Jeremy did likewise.
“Look, I…I’ve been doing a lot of thinking. A lot.” Stacy said. Then she looked down at the floor. “I’m sorry. This is really hard to say.”
She swallowed, then said, “But here goes: I don’t think I can date you guys anymore.”
“What?” said Candace. “What do you mean?”
“Are…Are you breaking up with us?” Jeremy asked.
“I’m really sorry,” Stacy said, her tone painfully contrite. “I’ve had an amazing time with you guys. I mean, seriously amazing. It’s…it’s just…when we were in the cave, and we’d just finished…doing all the incredible stuff we did, and we were laying there on the bed, I realized that that would have been a perfect time to, to say…‘I love you.’”
Stacy swallowed and added, “But I didn’t say it.”
“Well,” Jeremy said awkwardly, “maybe you just weren’t ready. I mean, me and Candace didn’t say it, either.”
“Right!” Candace agreed, suddenly desperate. “I mean, we were probably all just waiting for the right moment!”
“It’s not that,” Stacy replied. “I just realized that…that I’m not in love with you.” She looked from Candace to Jeremy and back. “Either of you.”
There was a long moment of silence, all of them looking at one another.
“I mean,” Stacy said, “I really like being with you guys. And the physical stuff has been unbelievable. But I feel like there’s something missing. You know, the emotional part.”
Jeremy looked at the carpet as he said, “I get it. I’m not crazy about it, but I get it.”
“Well I don’t!” Candace cried.
“Candace…” Jeremy said, putting a hand on her arm.
“No, this can’t be happening!” the redhead protested, tears starting to stream down her face.
“Candace, I’m so sorry!” Stacy cried. “It’s not because of you, I swear!”
“YES IT IS!” Candace bawled. "Don't you see? I'm a failure!"
Candace’s face fell into her hands as she wept.
“I was so stupid,” she choked. “I thought I could do something…something really good. My brothers make amazing things every day, but I only ever made one. And, and now, it's falling apart. Just like it was always going to!” She sniffed and said, “Just like everything I do always will.”
“Candace,” Jeremy said, “I know this hurts, but you can’t think about it like that. You made something happen that not a lot of people could. Maybe not even your brothers.”
He put his arm around her and said, “It doesn’t matter that it didn’t last forever. What matters to me is that I’m never going to forget it as long as I live.”
"But it's not just that!” Candace cried. “I'm losing my girlfriend AND my best friend!”
“Candace, don’t-” Stacy started.
“Stacy, I’m not just IN love with you, I LOVE you!” Candace shouted. “And I don't know how I'm ever going to go to the mall, or, or look at a pair of shoes on sale, or hear a Paisley Sideburn Brothers song on the radio without thinking about the fact that I’m doing it without you, and-"
"Candace!" Stacy shouted.
Candace snapped out of her screaming fit and looked at Stacy like an injured puppy.
"Candace," Stacy repeated. "Do you remember when we were five, and I was really upset because I lost my favorite pink hair bow, and you gave me your blue one to cheer me up, even though it was the only one you had?"
The redheaded teen nodded.
"I've worn a blue bow ever since,” Stacy went on. “Because that's how much what you did meant to me."
Candace stared.
"And then, when Coltrane broke up with me, and you saw that I was hurting, the first thing you did was take something precious to you--your relationship with Jeremy--and share it with me."
Stacy took Candace's hand and said, "How could I ever stop being your best friend when I know you would do that for me?"
Candace threw her arms around Stacy and cried, tears of sadness and joy mixing and soaking into Stacy’s dark hair.
***
It was about a week later, and Candace was watching suspiciously out her window as her brothers assembled two basketball hoops and opened several holes in the fabric of reality for a game of four-dimensional basketball. She hadn’t tried to bust Phineas and Ferb for a while now, but her bust-lust was definitely on the rise.
Her phone rang. It was Stacy, returning Candace’s earlier call.
“Hey, Stace,” Candace said, still keeping an eye on the action in the back yard. “You want to come with me and Jeremy to the movies tonight? Strictly in a third-wheel capacity, of course.”
“Actually,” Stacy said, “I’ve got Jeremy on the other line-”
“Hey, Candace,” the boy said.
“-because I have a question for both of you,” Stacy finished.
“What is it?” Candace asked.
“Well…,” Stacy began, “I know we’re just friends now, and that’s how I think it should stay. But…there’s stuff that I miss…a lot.”
“Okayyy,” Candace said, not sure what Stacy was getting at.
“So I’m wondering…” Stacy said. “How would you guys feel about…being friends with benefits?”
“You mean, like, you want to have sex with us?” Jeremy asked. “Like, just…recreationally?”
“Well, yeah,” Stacy said. “I mean, why not, right? I mean, we’ve done it before, and we all liked it, so…”
“Right,” Candace breathed, uncertainty rapidly giving way to excitement. “Right! Why not? We’re mature young adults. We can handle it.”
“And if Candace is good with it, then I sure am,” said Jeremy.
“Awesome!” Stacy declared.
“As a matter of fact,” Jeremy said, “if you two aren’t busy, there’s nobody else home at my house right now…”
“Cool,” Stacy said. “Because I’ve been wanting to try something new. The, um, back door.”
“Don’t worry,” Jeremy replied. “Nobody’s going to look twice if you come through the front do- ohhhhh. Wow.”
Candace felt warm inside. She’d been wanting to try it, too, but had felt weird about bringing it up with Jeremy. But now she had Stacy as a catalyst.
“Sounds good to me,” Candace said. Then, turning her head away from the phone, she shouted, “Mom! I’m going over to Jeremy’s to have anal sex!”
“Okay, dear!” her mother called back. “I think your swim fins are in the attic!”
“What does she think you said?” Jeremy asked.
“Don’t know, don’t care,” Candace said. “Be there in a minute.”
She closed her phone and looked back out the window at what Phineas and Ferb were doing. It appeared that play had begun; Buford had just emerged from one of the reality-holes that was several feet in the air and made a slam dunk in one of the basketball hoops. Now Baljeet was chasing the ball through another such hole, shouting, “Phineas and Ferb, are you certain this game will not destroy the universe as we know it?”
“Not entirely sure,” Ferb replied. “But then, the universe as we don’t know it might be more interesting, anyway.”
Nodding, Candace said to herself, “Yeah. Yeah, it might.”
She smiled, and walked out the bedroom door.
